LION DEN
WELCOME TO THE LION DEN
Welcome to the Lion Den! While each rank in Cub Scouting is referred to as a "den" as a group of people, a "den" is also a place that animals can retreat to and call home. This is your den for the HomeScouting Adventure Club for Lions!
Lions are boys and girls in kindergarten in fall of 2020. When you're ready, get started on your first HomeScouting Adventure!

SEPTEMBER ADVENTURE:
GIZMOS & GADGETS
Gadgets are designed to make tasks easier. Think about the different between a can opener you turn and one that plugs into the wall. Computers are designed to move information around quickly. Some gizmos and gadgets are designed just for fun, like games. Some make life easier, like apps on a phone. They are start with moving parts. Can you make a gadget?
Make sure to download the connected worksheet for this month's adventure!

CONDUCT A ROLLING INVESTIGATION
*required for adventure*
Requirement 1: Explore the properties of motion by conducting a
rolling investigation with different-sized balls
What happens when you roll different objects down an incline? Will they roll
at the same speed? Will they do in a straight line? Let's investigate!
Materials Needed:
-
Different-sized balls
-
Cylinders
-
Pipes
-
Other similar items
Instructions:
-
Roll multiple objects at once down an incline and observe what happens!
-
Push the items across the floor and observe what happens!
Which ones roll faster—solid objects or hollow objects? Cylinders or spheres? Objects with large diameters or small diameters? When they roll down the incline, which one rolls the farthest? When they are pushed across the floor, do they roll at the same rate?
Learn more about how things roll and fall at different speeds!

Watch the investigation with Buckeye Council volunteer and Astronomy Professor, Claudia Barr and her daughter in Scouts BSA!

EXPLORE THE PROPERTIES OF FORCE
*required for adventure*
Requirement 2: Explore the properties of force by knocking over dominos by blowing a ping pong ball with a straw!
Materials Needed:
-
Dominos
-
A ping pong
-
Straw
Instructions:
-
Set up dominos on the table
-
Using a straw, blow enough air through the straw to knock over a domino with the ping pong ball! Can you knock over more than 1 domino?
Force is the push or pull applied on an object. It can move a stationary object or stop a moving object. Force can also change the speed and direction of a moving object. If enough force is applied, it can also change the shape or size of an object.
BUILD A GENUIS KIT & CREATE A USEFUL OBJECT

*required for adventure*
Requirement 3: Use household items in your Genius Kit to create a useful object
Gadgets are designed to make tasks easier. Think about the difference between a can opener you turn and one that plugs into the wall. Computers are designed to move information around quickly. Some gizmos and gadgets are designed just for fun, like games. Some make life easier, like apps. They all start with moving parts. Can you make a gadget?
Before getting started, make sure you have created a Genius Kit. What's in a Genius Kit? See Below.
-
Put together a “gadget” with the items provided in the genius kit.
-
Show your gadget to the rest of your family!
-
If multiple people make a gadget, can the gadgets all be added together to make one BIG gadget? What other gadgets can you make?

KEEP EXPLORING!

Continue the adventure by learning more about motion, force, and creating useful objects!
CREATE A GADGET COLLAGE
Look through magazines, and cut out pictures of gadgets that make tasks easier! Make a poster to share with your family or at your next den or pack meeting.
GO ON A GADGET FIELD TRIP!
Go on a field trip to learn about gadgets in the real world. Below are different options:
-
Visit a museum that shows the progression of gadgets and gizmos over time
-
Visit a hardware store to see what makes up gadgets and gizmos
-
Visit a community member who has an interest in historical artifacts and can show your Lion antique gadgets and gizmos
